Good story, but it should have fleshed out the theme that everyone is living a double life, instead of just vaguely touching on it. Also, the irony at the end was really forced and overwrought.
Scorsese's one of my fave directors ever but this is a disaster. 1st time I saw it I thought it was dull and overwritten. Then I watched the original Infernal Affairs trilogy which was brilliant (esp the 1st two). That convinced me to rewatch The Departed and it actually made it worse. Scorsese has managed to take a script of interesting characters and make them boring and 2 dimensional. Possibly his worst film.
An unnecessary remake of a quality film. I'm glad Francis Ford Coppola finally got his oscar.
One of Scorsese's greatest masterpieces, that passes its source both in style and dramatic scope. His frenetic editing leads to a disjointed and thrilling experience. Scorsese also cuts into modern American class relations, never holding back. This is no simple thriller, this is the modern American city. Also, Matt Damon proves yet again his unshakable reliability.
Yeah, seen this movie so many times is's ridiculous. Jack Nicolson is so fun to quote.
As a remake, this movie is very well done... (but I think "Infernal Affairs" is better).
They're really different movies. William Monhan wrote a lot of depth into the Scorsese version that's simply not present in the Hong Kong original – particularly all the really interesting stuff related to the impotence and sexual virility of the characters. It's tied to all the movie's themes.
A dull and uninteresting movie. Sure there is a stellar cast but the whole lot chew the scenery to the point of ridicule. Only Leo comes off as a solid actor actually trying to portray a believable character. I feel sorry for Scorsese that it was for this movie he got the Oscar nod since it is messy, poorly paced and completely below the level he usually works on.
I won't say The Departed is the movie that should've gotten the Oscar for but its a very solid movie. The performances are great and the story's tight. Always nice to see Jack Nicholson act. The tension in this movie was so much I still yell at the screen during the last 15 minutes of this movie. One of the few rare cases where the remake surpasses the original.
great movie! i think it was worth my wait. Jack, Leo, Matt, the whole cast was phenomanal!! i personally loved the bits of humor, AND THAT ENDING!!! Oi!!! WHAT AN ENDING!!
What a cast. I could watch this a million times and it won't get old. Very well written. The little bit of comedy works perfectly with the tense dramatic feel.
Among my top 10. It has a strong plot and the blurred lines that distinguish good guy from bad guy. There's twist and turns everywhere. There are moments of tension, violence, drama and sadness moments multi-layered with some comedic moments even funnier than most comedies! The casts does their acting job superbly also their character develops in the movie. All delivered with the expert direction from Scorsese.
Leonardo DiCaprio can still be great, strong & beautiful. the first time for me! makes me want to go to Boston: this movie is the ONLY thing that makes me wanna do that, actually. too many superstars in this: so dizzying. bloody & gross, tuff love.
DiCaprio and Damon in one movie. Where else you can find it plus the funny and smart story.
