Rather muted Gallic variant on Highsmith with most of the expected genre excesses kept firmly under-par. It coasts along rather too politely to the predictable finale enlivened only with occasional flourishes of art direction and blasts of organ music; but one only wishes it was a little less buttoned-up and just disgraced itself once in a while with a dollop of sleaze.
