i certainly hope this is a criticism of the documentary's representation of Daniel Johnston and not the man himself.
I don't think I have ever seen Gibby Haynes so inadequate than when they ask him if he gave Johnston acid.
Even if you haven't heard his music, or even if you don't like it, DJ's a remarkable person and makes for a bigger film than most sci-fi can lay claim to. His songwriting is monumental, and this documentary follows him well through bouts of creativity, friendship, his One Love, his relationship with his mother, working with other musicians, his long-standing job at McD's and his incarceration in mental institutions.
I watched this without previous knowledge of his work and it totally worked for me. I'm very impressed. Daniel Johnston is very talented and has an intense mind. You can see this through the film and it'll leave you wanting for more.
Agreed with Hazel Hills, I recently watched it for the 3rd time and it honestly gets better each viewing. I knew nothing about him before this, and that's the way to see it.
I don't think this man is a "genius" by any stretch of the word, but it was interesting nonetheless.
there's no denying, he has incredible talent... And his lyrics are highly creative... he also has a huge output of his creativity and it all just comes naturally to him. In my opinion, that's genius
Excellent documentary examines the complicated life and personality of one of the most fascinating figures in recent pop culture. Whatever your opinion of Daniel Johnston and his art, director Jeff Feuerzeig finds just the right blend of style, pathos, and ambiguity to make this one of the most intriguing and poignant character studies, documentary or otherwise.
Where I first learned of the brilliant singer/songwriter named Daniel Johnston. One of my favorite documentaries ever.
