The Devil Came on Horseback takes the viewer on an emotionally charged journey into the heart of Darfur, Sudan, where an Arab run government is systematically executing a plan to rid the province of it’s black African citizens. As an official military observer, Steidle had access to parts of the country that no journalist could penetrate. He was unprepared for what he would witness and experience, including being fired upon, taken hostage, and being unable to intervene to save the lives of young children. Ultimately frustrated by the inaction of the international community, Steidle resigned and returned to the US to expose the images and stories of lives systematically destroyed.
Important documentary indeed casting an eye on yet another ignored genocide. The politcal rhetoric is always "we can never let this happen again" yet it happens again and again; holocaust, armenia, cambodia, rwanda, darfur...... The film somewhat hurt by the fact it limits itself to Brian Steidle's journey and may have been more impactful in concentrating on origins and stories first hand.
told by a former u.s. marine who volunteered as an unarmed observer in darfur and witnessed genocide firsthand by the government backed janjaweed militia. total respect to brian steidle who fought to get this story out and wake up the world to yet another ethnic cleansing. this is a horrific and important documentary. if you want to see the face of evil, welcome to hell
