You say if this was then for the rest of your statement you assume it is. It's not that exercise at all, so you needn't worry.
This film does nothing for me, the story gets boring half-way, I don't feel anything else than flat-out indifference for the characters, and I passionately want the whole thing to end. If this was an exercise in understanding the way a woman thinks, no no no... Could not be further removed from our psychic reality. Compare with La Double Vie de Veronique, or any Kieslowski for that matter.

Thanks for clearing that up. But films, books... once they're let loose, the consumer becomes the author and is free to interpret it in any way, so original intentions don't count. I wonder what it was about, if not the inner life of an upper-class woman.
I don't know what the original intent was, but I can tell you that it's obviously not trying to understand women. But who are you to say that it's far from women's "psychic reality"? I'm less able to speak for women, obviously, but your claim kind of narrows it down, "all women are like me" kind of way.
There is so much magic to this movie; it's in the graceful camerawork, the amazing performances, and the richness of story and character.
Rich and sumptuous melodrama about a Countess who sells a pair of earrings to cover a debt, telling her husband a little white lie to hide her small shame, and in the process sets off a domino effect as the earrings continue to come back to haunt her, trapping her in a web of her own lies. Opulent and brilliantly scripted, the film is a profound reflection on inescapable consequences of dishonesty.
Wonderful picture from Ophuls. A great script keeping one guessing where our fickle heroine will take us next. A finely tuned creation on all fronts. Rich cinematography by Matras (such exquisite use of camera movement), decadant art direction and costume design and great performances by the three leads.
Dizzying greatness. A merry-go-round of tracking shots. Love and deceit mingle in a romantic film. Bitter, but not sweet. Humorous, but not joyful.
I'd never seen Charles Boyer acting in French until I watched this film. It was really a lovely treat.
Stylish and beautifully shot but it still lacks the emotional passion that "Letter from an Unknown Woman" has. I can't help but not feel a thing for the main character
There is more here than amazing sets, costumes, photography and tracking shots. This film has good performances and dialogue that keeps you watching, although the main character is so shallow. Loved how the plot revolves around the earrings,as they have a bearing on the relationships.
A greatly shot film and a well told story of one woman's fateful decision leading to the very downfall of her passionate pursuits.
