The comparisons to "Piss Christ" are apt, aesthetically and in the sense that the viewer can be as outraged, moved or apathetic as one chooses to be. The saturated yellows of the sodium lights, the disembodied voices, the sounds of ever-present rain, and the oppressive imagery are artfully assembled to explore the dark halls of memory and psyche. Yet the story and theme are remarkably unremarkable. 30 min is enough.
Influenced by Tarkovsky and the color sceme of Serrano's "Piss Christ" apparently, this is a surrealistic nightmare is one of von Trier's better films.
Disturbing detective story with beautiful cinematography that laid foundations for von Trier's future works
disturbing but brilliant... for me it's really the most cryptic film by von Trier... the allegories aren't that clear in this one...I have to re-watch it...
I loved the cinematography and the way the story was told but honestly I had a little trouble figuring out exactly what was going on. I'll have to watch it again.
a real masterpiece of neo noir. the psychology of this is fantastic, as it allows you to crawl inside a disturbed and broken mind. the performances are awkward and sort of hollow at times, but designed perfectly to be so. and the style from von trier is marvellous, with the lighting a particular highlight. his use of slow motion foreshadows his later films. one of the key von trier masterpieces.
I thought the visuals/cinematography were amazing but they couldn't keep me interested for 104 mins, it was so painfully slow i was fallen asleep half way through the film. Also half of the time i couldn't make out what the characters were saying, not sure if it was jus bad audio quality or the film itself.
Just not my cup of tea. I couldn't get past the first 30 minutes. I didn't like the images of the dead horse, and the dream-like visual imagery wasn't enough to keep my interest.
I can understand why people don’t love Element of Crime. It just makes me sad and sorry for them. Why in the first place does a film need to be “sensical” or “necessary” ? I don’t get it. Element of Crime is the unique vision of an artist trying to show us his anxieties and the way he feels the material world around him. Nothing new here. Thousands of writers, painters or composers did try it before Lars von Trier. Highly recommended.
Watch Element of Crime for free at: www.artmovies.tk From the artisctical point of view maybe one of the inovative movies of the last 30 years or more. Trully the people who set in jurry of diferent awards are not really familiareazed with the art medium. They need the triviall form of narrative film. The film under the dictature of the story. But Element of crime are first a art work.
One of the most pretentious, nonsensical, dull and unnecessary films I've ever seen. For shame, Mr. Von Trier.
