Bunuel is the great equalizer. His work has had a way of putting people and institutions in their place as if to proclaim they aren’t above anyone or thing. And Exterminating Angel only exemplifies this. It’s one of his most delectable because it’s obvious, in retrospect, that these guests can leave whenever they wish. Yet, somehow he makes it plausible to force these characters to stay – with humorous results. Much like Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie, this one’s relaxed and easygoing while relentless in its attack underneath it all. A masterpiece altogether and a fitting primer to his work.
