TGW is yet another highlight of Polanski's masterful career. Ewan McGregor is splendid as the reserved writer. A flawless suspense thriller
Briskly paced, yet unhurried. Well drawn characters well portrayed by fine actors. This is the work of a master craftsman telling a good, taut story.
A slightly uneven political thriller, this investigation into the secrets of the former Prime Minister of the UK and the writing of his memoir by a ghost writer, a very good Ewan McGregor, isn't as quite as edge-of-your-seat as one might hope. It's clever at times but suffers from a terrible Cattrall and a slight sense of the all-too glossy.
A sort-of remake of his own The Ninth Gate, with the supernatural being replaced by the vaguely political. Usual concerns reoccur, from the well-meaning protagonist manipulated into embracing his own downfall, to shadowy conspiracies, murder and intrigue, and a final shot that plays more like a perverse joke than any kind of conventional closure. The beach-scenes invoke the tragic spirits of Cul-de-sac and Macbeth.
Tense. Kim Cattrall almost ruins it with an inexplicable accent. Olivia Williams more than makes up for that; very underrated.
Roman Polanski is so good at crafting suspenseful movies. like in his previous films, nothing is placed haphazardly throughout the film; the design, setting, weather, and music are placed exactly where they should be to perform exactly the right role, as if they were all characters of their own, all with their own lines and inflections.
I was very surprised with this film. I didn't love it up until that shocking scene toward the end. Very suspenseful, with some great acting. Highly recommended.
Subtle up to the ending, which feels right but a bit rushed, everything else is rife with suspense and unexpectedness in true form.
Slick reworking of the Manchurian Candidate, almost pitch perfect for the times. I doubted the casting, but once again Polanski finds a way to draw something out of actors you never thought they had.
It's good to see Polanski being Polanski. I see this as the older and mature brother of Ninth Gate. Although lesser weirder and funnier. The story is very dull, but Polanski direction elevates the whole thing. Recommended.
