The decline of Merchant Ivory into the periphery, and perhaps, into irrelevancy altogether, is evident in their first picture of the millennium: a fairly unremarkable, unsympathetic tale based on Henry James’ turn-of-the-century novel, notwithstanding the plain competency of the cast and crew.
