Synopsis

This Film Four production is a fascinating examination of a single father and features a superlative cast – Hopkins, Broadbent, Whalley and Callow.

Hopkins is Hooper, a man who spends his days ranting and raging due in large part, we initially suspect, to the fact that his wife has left him for another man and he only gets to see his son at the weekend. Hooper befriends a teacher (a young Jim Broadbent in fine form) in a similar position, and chides him into suing for custody of his own son – but as that court case proceeds a gentle softening in his own attitude to his wife, a new relationship with Joanne Whalley and being brought into close contact with Simon Callow’s rather horrible City lawyer change his attitude.

The Good Father is tremendously interesting both as an examination of what happens to fathers who are sundered from their children but also, as Hooper’s climactic revelation reveals, in terms of the effect of children on a marriage. It is certainly a must for any fans of Anthony Hopkins. —www.moviemail-online.co.uk

Newell became an international name thanks to “Four Weddings and a Funeral” (1994), a witty romantic comedy that helped turn Hugh Grant into a star. Taking a decidedly American turn, he directed the gritty crime drama, “Donnie Brasco” (1997), only to follow with… read more
