one more time : 'balls to the wall'
Continuing my budding obsession with South Korean cinema is this wonderful film here. Described by its director Jee-woon Kim as a “kimchi western,” The Good, the Bad, the Weirdlike the country of its origin is a spicy mix of various elements. It’s a western, a war film, a thriller, an absurd comedy, and even a bit of a kung-fu movie. The plot is minimal. Three guys are after a treasure map. There’s the crazy thief The Weird, the psychotic The Bad, and the stoic bounty hunter The Good. On top of that the Imperial Japanese Army and a gang of Manchurian bandits are after the map as well. Set in the vast deserts and crowded cities of 1930s Manchuria the film is a non-stop thrill ride. The action scenes are on-par with John Woo’s work; balletic and bloody, and the chase scene at the end involving horses, cannons, bandits and motorcycles evokes a sort of strange post-modern version of the climax of John Ford’s Stagecoach. This movie is ultimately a popcorn action flick, but I had a big grin on my mouth the entire time. It’s visually stunning, shot in glorious widescrin; the camera is dizzying and glides and zooms over and under everything. And I was kept on the edge of my seat the entire time. The Good, the Bad, the Weird is a wonderful tribute to the late masters.
Incredible fuckin' funny movie. Kim Jee-woon honors Sergio Leone with authenticity.
this movie is spicer than thai chicken! get urself a clip of the train sequence and have urself a good party. this guy who sells rice cakes on it attacks his customers, i dont know about you but i think thats bad marketing, this guys a real weirdo, also theres some emo guy chasing him down, he whistles at him, must be a queer, but nuff said this spicy thai chicken is a little to oily so its only a 8.5 for mytastebuds
What cinema was invented for. One incredible set piece after another make this a tour-de-force action-adventure. A glorious and unforgettable experience.
Sometimes derivative, but done in homage rather than rip-off, this fast-paced movie is the antidote to Hollywood sequel-itis when it comes to action-adventure films. And it's so much fun to watch, especially because of its combination of action and humor. Why is South Korea making better "Hollywood" films than Hollywood?
Very creative and so much fun! South Korea never seizes to amaze me with their cinema.
This movie had me in splits throughout, mainly due to Song Kang-Ho. The chase sequence is one of the greatest ever. The action scenes are all intriguing and funny. Korean Cinema has a lot of very 'pedestrian' humour, as I'd like to call it. And I love that.
After a second viewing I've decided to raise my rating to a full 5 out of 5. This movie is extremely underrated. Its such a spectacular action film with an absolutely fantastic chase scene. Also the acting is very good. Extremely recommended!
A thoroughly ridiculous (and not in the good sense) Western spoof. It seems like it should work, but it's too long by about an hour and nothing really works; not the humour, not the actions scenes, and certainly not the unfortunately labyrinthine plot.
A week has passed since I watched The Good, The Bad, The Weird, and I'm still thrilled by the movie's color and fluid motion. I particularly loved how Kim Ji-woon cut less for his action shots, choosing instead to make the distance by sending the camera soaring and zooming through space.
reminds me of something like Kung fu Hustle but has a lot more artistic value. Plus great "balls to the wall" gunfights!
If this had come out this year it would be on my top 10. A reimagining of THE GOOD, THE BAD, THE UGLY. with slight changes and it's own style. I loved it a small flm that becomes a eppic and is never boring highly recommended.
The greatest adventure move of all time. And yeah, I'm counting the first three Indiana Jones movies. WHAT NOW SUCKA
I really love the way Kim Ji-woon directs action in this and A Bittersweet Life. Lots of fast moving POV style shots. I really like when you can move the camera that quickly and not confuse the audience.
The good: action&comedic performances, The bad: Chang Yi's hairstyle & yes, I smell Michael Bay everywhere, The weird: Korean cowboys.
I think I possibly had too high of an expectation for this one. All in all, a very enjoyable film but not much else. The small nods to Leone are all but few sadly. This film was more Michael Bay then it was Spaghetti Western.
