Making Mick a sexualized teenager kind of distracts from the loneliness and isolation that was so central to the book's theme. Maybe I am just biased. Alan Arkin is great though, which is the only reason I gave it two stars instead of one.
Really great acting from Arkin and Locke, but I feel like the movie should have been more emotionally affecting than it is. The ending felt very rushed and hackneyed... I can remember feeling much more while reading the book.
This movie has always stayed with me.
