After the first act I was ready to write this off as a film to grand in scope to ever be concise and worthwhile. However, it wasn’t frustrating enough to turn off, so I powered through. Once I let go of any resistance I had coming in, I came to truly enjoy this film. Martel guides us through a world full of subtle drama. Nothing is ever thrown in your face, nor are you expected to catch every detail.
The framing is some of the best I’ve seen in any film. As stated before, nothing is meant to be seen. There is actions occurring in the background, extras will cross the frame and distract, because that is how the real world works. It truly has a Yang aspect to it, where nothing feels contrived; Action plays out the way it’s meant to.
It has it’s flaws, the first act is full of religious jargon (which might have been the cause of my resistance.) I get it, there is plenty of hypocrisy within us all, especially religion. But that’s a topic that’s been tackled, and all I want to see it this girl be bad. Thankfully Martel comes to her senses and deviates from the religion and into the naughty.
A good film for anyone to watch, and a good start to my coming South American Film Venture of The Onesies.
