A Thoughtful social satire, An uncanny comical essence, strong characterization, superb acting performance, deep and melancholic family drama. How can someone has all those things in one package? especially from a biological sci-fi thriller? Well Bong Joon-Ho does that. A thrilling and very well-crafted cinematic experience.
I don't get why you all people get so excited about this film, i don't understand why?Personally, for me it totally sucked. Sorry but this is my opinion.
Not only one of the best monsters movies ever, which it is, but an all around great movie. So many different things going on in this film. Interesting commentary on family, politics, and government. Very funny, very entertaining, at times very emotional, and beautifully shot with some really exciting action scenes. Its basically an all around wonderful, amazing film. What more could you ask for? 5/5 stars.
First of all, highly misleading US poster -- don't expect some horror monster flick. This is a human drama of an ordinary family in the face of a minor mutant aquatic beast (as opposed to some godzilla-sized monstrosity) and black comedy/commentary about the ineptitude of organized government in a crisis situation. If you know what you're getting into, it's got the perfect balance of an entertaining allegory
Not my cup of tea, good enough of you like this sort of movie. What is Bong Joon-ho's politics? Interesting film.
Holy fuck. It's not perfect (that climax is a wee bit convenient), but one of the best monster movies ever.
it's all kinds of genres, I didn't expect to have so much fun when catching this film in the cinema on a whim
Here's a movie that left me speechless. Joon-ho Bong's film is funny, dark, bright and innovative. After 15 minutes, you know that, despite the fact that THE HOST belongs to a very codified genre, the Giant Monster movie, its director is undoubtedly an auteur. The test of the second vision turned out also well for the film. Masterpiece, no doubt about that.
Nowhere near as memorable as "Memories of Murder" but a great homage to old monster films. I especially like how Bong Joon-ho included overly explicit political commentary and polarization to the point of being campy which was a characteristic prevalent to this specific genre. Its funny though that some audiences took this way too seriously....
This movie got a lot of good reviews from people who enjoy "monster movie with a message" type films. In reality the reviewers seem to have confused Anti-Americanism with a message. Grates on anyone less lazily prejudiced.
