The first film I’ve seen from a Brazilian filmmaker and I’m impressed. The long shots were like moments from a painting, which was the original inspiration for the film. The lack of a music score until the very end of the film gave the film it’s atmosphere and added extra weight and importance to the classical piece that ended the film. With nothing but the sounds of the wind and sand, the viewer is removed from watching this as a film and actually begin to feel like they’re there and brings them into the epic story. Excellent acting by Fernada Montenegro and Fernada Torres who play three generation’s of women and a solid performance from Seu Jorge who never broke character. (Was a fan of Jorge since The Life Aquatic and his Portuguese renditions of David Bowie classics) Definitely a gem of a film.
