Brazil + It's A Wonderful Life, a 7/10 my review: http://mubi.com/reviews/24693
All the ingredients are there, but the cake was undercooked. Fairly mediocre, and lacking a punch, although there's heaps of style to enjoy.
The Coens really used to know how to rap. The entire film plays like one storytelling excersise after another, held together by steady pans. At its best points this reminds me of Chaplin's MODERN TIMES -a sureal stylized jab at capitalist enterprise. Then it free falls into apologetics and wishwash. Moreover and sadly, the heart of the story cannot transcend its theatrics: rendering it without a lasting impression.
Pure sentimentality in a way that only the Coens could do, this is one of their weirdest, most wonderful films.
I don't know why this movie gets the bad rap it does. Sure not all the jokes worked and some parts were just plain weird but it was definitely very sweet and very entertaining. Also Tim Robbins was extremely charming and fun as the lead. Also if not for anything else, watch this film for Steve Buscemi as a beatnik bartender.
What more could you ask for? Co-written by the Coen bros & Sam Raimi, Bruce Campell, Steve Buscemi, and Hula-hoops. Classic coen bros quirky comedic style and some Sam Raimiesque cinematography from time to time. The end was a bit rediculous but quite memorable. Reccommended!
The opening. Oh, the opening. I love the opening. I love the music. I love Melvin Van Peebles' voice-over narration. The rest of the film isn't quite as good (the ecstatic hula-hoop montage excluded), but I'm a fan just cuz of the opening.
His Girl Friday meets John Doe. I wonder whether the younger generation , who doesn't know the movies of Frank Capra and Howard Hawks, can appreciate THE HUDSUCKER PROXY's screenplay on its own merit. With the Coen brothers, cinema really lives on its ashes. These guys, with Samuel Raimi for this film, have certainly seen a respectable number of films in their youth and I have no doubt that they sincerely love cinema but do they really add something personal to these themes already handled by talented directors decades ago ? As they've got style, I give them the benefit of the doubt. At least for the time being. Recommended.
this film is surely a gazelle/antelope or an ibex...stylized and funny. the script has a great structure built around circles...dialogues and scenes are repeated but wd diffrnt meaning each time giving it a circular narrative. coen bros certainly have an ear for dialogue...must see for any cinephile
Love it. One of the most enjoyable and delightful of the Coen's films. Light. Fun. Hilarious performances and all in the indelible Coen style. Highly recommended.
