Agree. I saw it in the darkest room in the house and man, did I freak.
Stunning cinematography, and an unbelievably convincing performances by the two (creepy ass) orphans, and Deborah Kerr. The lake scene creeps the hell out of me, I almost faint due to uneasiness (not really). A bone chilling piece of art.
Gloriously shot with equally glorious performances. I was hooked from to the stunning opening credits to the chilling ending.
this is one of the creepiest films I've ever seen. the cinematography is flawless, beautiful. I can't even explain it. the fade in/outs are amazing. the dream sequence/hallucination is one of the best I've ever seen. the story builds up from the beginning, but ever so slowly, perfectly. I really love everything about this film. the children freak me out.
I'll have to pick up Henry James' short story, because this was a jaw dropping piece of cinema. I was covering my eyes at some points with pure fright. The film drips with layers upon layers of undertones, and had my head spinning at many points. The cinematography steals the show here. Light, shadow and space are used to maximum effect, and the use of sound only adds to the chilling atmosphere. Don't miss this one.
One of the very best psychological horror films. Chilling to the bone. Deborah Kerr gives a unforgettable performance.
A masterpiece of horror, proving that gore is not at all necessary to creating the type of eerie/horrifying atmosphere necessary for a classic in the genre. The two alternative interpretations of the film are equally frightening, meaning it is constructed well enough to leave one uneasy regardless of how they read the film.
Creepy film, the cinematography is excellent and it's so rare that child actors perform well. Bravo!
One of the most tense films I have ever seen. I held my breath through most of it. Scary!
One of the greatest horror films ever made. An underseen, underrated masterpiece that shows how much the medium can actually accomplish.
This chilling masterpiece contains one of my favorite creepy scenes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_7qWwgtPolU
The best ghost movie I have ever seen no matter how many times I saw it. Sex and corruption have never been so well showed than in the shot of a bug crawling out of a statue's mouth. No peculiar special effects, just camera movements, a perfect control of the sound and the musical score and great actors. Jack Clayton is still grossly underrated. Masterpiece.
A critique of Victorian repression and hysteria embedded within an elegant ghost story.
Elegant adaptation of Henry James' gothic classic. A rich atmosphere with excellent cinematography by Freddie Francis, but despite many strong moments of fevered suspense, it ultimately lacks the compelling layers of ambiguity in James' novel, maybe sticking too close to the stage adaptation its based on rather than the novel itself. Deborah Kerr is a bit shrill in the lead, but the two child actors are excellent. A classic, but maybe not on the level its been made out to be.
About as good afilm about losing your mind as possible. Or, one of the best, ghost stories ever. Take your pick. A perfect 10.
