Totally agree with everything that you just said. WB Animation should have kept making more films. A masterpiece.
The story may sound like your typical "E.T." plot, but it so much different than you could ever imagine. The giant is so innocent that you can't help but love him and the villain is such an amazingly smarmy bastard. The elements of Cold War-induced paranoia and the giant becoming what he chooses to be, rather than what he was built for are handled perfectly and make the film more original. Brad Bird's magnum opus.
The reason I love animation. It's an impeccably paced film filled with frames which are each works of art. It also gets points for throwing some heavy philosophy on personal identity into a kids film. Beautiful.
The only films I've ever cried at: It's a Wonderful Life, Toy Story 3, and this film.
While at first glance it may seem like "E.T. with a giant robot," it's a lot more than that. Great voice acting (Vin Diesel as the Iron Giant), beautiful score by Michael Kamen, and amazing animation by Warner Bros. Feature Animation, this is a great beginning to the career of Brad Bird which unfairly bombed at the box office. Check it out.

Heart warming. It was very close at the end to becoming excellent but they ruined it. He's okay!
Well, to be fair, they DID set up earlier in the film that he could repair himself, so it's not like he could just do it out of nowhere.
I actually felt that the ending with the robot pieces (starting of with the screw tapping the window) was pretty good, transcendent even, on a par with that of Dreyer's Ordet... Certainly better then ending it with the typical trivial post-denouement dialogue.
The best animated film you've never seen. If you have seen it though, you know how absolutely brilliant it is!
The Iron Giant is one of those movies that still makes me tear up even thinking about it. It's a touching movie about a boy and his unusual friendship with, you guessed it, an iron giant. Still, that description makes it sound corny, but it really does have a lot to offer, especially for animation fans. Brad Bird is at the top of his game with this one.
This is a fantastic kids movie, one that I really need to watch again. :) And when I say it's good as a kids film, I don't mean it's only good for kids. It's really just good. :) Savvy
A complete delight of a film. Adventurous, touching, and groundbreaking. Exemplifies how 2D animation is still a powerful medium when in the hands of a great filmmaker and storyteller. Vin Diesel's greatest performance.
