On the eve of her funeral morbid curiosity finally brought me to this Thatcher biopic and it turned out to be exactly as I anticipated; a rather interesting but somewhat shallow portrait of a deeply complex woman dominated by a typically barnstorming performance by Streep. The complex flashback structure depicts numerous episodes from her life and career in an oversimplified but never less than entertaining manner..
Meryl Streep as Blessed Teresa of Calcutta.
Glorifies Thatcher in a sugar-coated, exploitative and emotionally manipulative way. I know plenty of people my age who have said after watching this film that they find Thatcher inspirational. But this film is propaganda. It should let people see both sides of the story. It's entertaining, anyhow.
Actually liked this take on Margaret Thatcher.. a different portrait. Loved all the scenes with Thatcher and her husband, and then with glimpses of her political life shown in between. Liked it a lot.
Fantastic perf. from Streep but a disappointing one from Jim "What's he LIKE? Again Please!" Broadbent - also a crap script.
How is it possible to make such a flat film about one of the most controversial politicians in modern UK history?
A beautiful drama. Outstandingly performed by the great Meryl Streep, although I must say I hate to see this figure mythologized through the film. I would have preferred to see the script taken away from the political figure and transformed into a movie about an old lady debating herself between her ambitions and her need for human care, although it wouldn't have been that succesful I'm sure.
Very conservatively biased but ultimately quite compelling. One of Streep's best performances.
Almost as bad as The Queen. Hate Thatcher's ass, no movie's going to turn me round on that one.
Meryl Streep is Excellent.
A bad film masquerading as high drama awful on every level
nice surreal touch. it really took away from hating her politics so much that you couldn't watch the film.
It definitely has its flaws narratively, but that can be forgiven by the production value and Meryl Streep's remarkable performance. It's a shame it wasn't better, but a lack of balance is a quality of many bio-pics.
Typical techniques use when telling a biography on screen that uses flashbacks, but this one has a lot!!! haha... But Meryl Streep is great as usual.
Often vulgar, never refined, always entertaining, sometimes moving, impeccably acted by Meryl Streep.
Meryl, don't you have better new friends than Phyllida?
The movie is pretty overrated, but Meryl Streep's performance was definitely brilliant!
Since it hangs on a single performance, a straight-forward biopic would have sufficed. All the visual trickery just gets in Meryl's way.
Meryl Streep was absolutely brilliant, bur the movies overall is boring.
Another amazing performance by the awesome Streep!
Gloomy interiors of the mind derails an otherwise smart biopic fueled almost entirely on the dynamism of Streep/Broadbent who fill the screen with wit, charm and allier. Purposely morose flashback strategy shows Thatcher in decline, still able, magnetic, but coming undone leaves a bitter taste for those who know mental illness. Result is critical acclaim but no movie of the week. Hard to like, easy to appreciate.
One word for Thatcher: INSPIRING!!
Very underwhelming. Instead of a flashback-ridden spectacle with drab, dreary, mundane scenery, it would've been much more fascinating to depict her story coherently from humble beginnings as a grocery store operator to one of the most powerful and enigmatic politicians of the twentieth century. The film makes her into a dim, slightly interesting character and chooses to showcase no real insight or moral.
Yawn.......................who really cares about Margaret Thatchers day to day life? I have no idea how Meryl Streep, who is my favorite actress, ever won the academy award for this movie. Viola Davis got robbed of the Oscar this year.
Somebody once wrote "If I want to see a decent Thatcher biopic, I'll see 'Cloverfield'." Jokes aside, this film blunders and should have been edited. Yes, Streep's performance is very good, but the script and direction treats the viewer as a fool unable to think, and every metaphor is extremely over-simplified. Not interesting, and actually not very delving or critical.
Wow, what the fuck happened here? I guess the story of Margaret Thatcher might be interesting, but the video clip style selected to shoot the movie its sooo wrong. Why is she talking to ghosts? Why the make up makes her look like an SNL spoof?
Meryl Streep might be a good actress, but this is too much. Her good performance is wasted in a messy film that drags way too long.
''Watch your thoughts for they become words. Watch your words for they become actions. Watch your actions for they become... habits. Watch your habits, for they become your character. And watch your character, for it becomes your destiny''
I hate film biographies! They're only made so that actors can get awards. Play a famous person, and BAM! you get nominated. I've critized Michelle Williams' MM which is THE most overrated performance of the year. Meryl Streep is in an entirely different league than MW. But still, Streep's not all great here. She's incredibly moving as the old Thatcher, but she's too much of a charicature as the younger Thatcher.
