The Jazz Singer

The best part of Warner’s DVD set is the documentary on the development of sound in pictures. I think I’ve watched that more times than the movie itself. I also had a lot more fun watching that disc of Vaudeville performers committing career suicide.
The film itself is just so unbearable and hard to watch, especially since Jolson really doesn’t act all that well, not to downplay his great singing. If it wasn’t the first sound film and didn’t start that horrendous musical fad of the late 1920s, we wouldn’t remember it at all.
