Karel Zeman

Karel Zeman (November 3, 1910 – April 5, 1989) was a Czech film director, artist, production designer and animator. Because of his creative use of special effects and animation in his films, he has often been called the "Czech Méliès.

Zeman was born on November 3, 1910, in Ostroměř (near Nová Paka) in what was then Austria-Hungary. In the 1920s, he studied at a French advertising school, and worked at an advertising studio in Marseilles until 1936.It was in France that he first worked with animation, filming an ad for soup. This is a masterpiece from Karel Zeman - a kind of epitome of what political animation could be, all the while preserving an almost fabular, "kindergarten" quality. Zeman's B&W-era seamless fusing of animation and live action (sometimes within the same frame) is eye-poppingly spectacular even half a century after it was made. Wish Zeman was as widely viewed and known as his more famous compatriot Jiri Trinka. For me, this one is an absolute must-watch from within the canon of East European animation. Also, can't help thinking of Jan Mimra's Tower of Babel, another little-known masterpiece of Czech animation. Felt compelled to put up this short note and rate the film, since nobody else did :) Do watch this when you can.
