Messy, but there is a great film buried in there somewhere

By Chris on October 20, 2010

It’s a bit of a muddled mess, but there are still hints of greatness throughout, and it manages to stand as a pretty effective film overall. For all its faults, The Keep boasts a moody, oppressive atmosphere, appropriately bleak production design, creepy and effective use of sound, a stellar cast and a top-notch monster design. On the down side, the score is a bit silly, and the lead actress has a terminal case of 80s hair, but neither is much of a deal breaker (if you’re able to roll with everything else, that is). As it stands, I really liked this one, but I would kill to see the three hour director’s cut, as I have a feeling it could be really special.
