Good documentary on Steve Weibe/Billy Mitchell's battle for the Donkey Kong high score. Gets an extra star for that arcade. I WANT TO GO THERE!
A documentary comprised of giant egos, passive-agressive worshipping fiends that are also highly competitive manchildren, restraining orders, dubious VHS tapes and housewives that should be given a medal for their understanding and patience. The result is beyond funny.
If you are not entertained by this, you must be dead already. "Documentary" is probably a misnomer for King of Kong, but it's edited together with so much panache, with such clearly defined opposing forces in Steve and Billy that you can't help but be drawn in. If you're a video game fan, you'll be in awe. And shucks, one mom even admits her son might be slightly autistic. Highly recommended.
The absurdity this film presents as truth is what I found really compelling. You've got gunslinger Billy (who kept reminding me of Nick Cave) and humble, domestic, beaten-down Steve, and I'm certain neither portrayal is anywhere close to reality (all those hot sauce shots? c'mon), but the dexterity of the archetypes and the outliers that hang around the fringes of the film force me to give a strong recommendation.
Not exactly a documentary, more like a hyper-realist narrative fashioned from actual footage. Take it with a pinch salt. Still pretty fantastic.
I like it. I think it's decent. I don't get why everyone think it's so great. I can come up with at least 5 documentaries more fun and entertaining than this off the top of my head.
A documentary about ancient game that used to be popular when Baby Raptor Jesus still wearing his diaper, Donkey Kong (I never like this game anyway), our protagonist is just a man who is obsessed of breaking a world record set before by a hairy douchebag with big boobed wife and amazing collection of bad ties...
A surprisingly enjoyable documentary with a great cast of real characters. At first it didn't seem to be going anywhere, but then you get sucked in by its brilliance. Very well constructed.
The high score on a 30 year old video game. How do I end up caring so much about something so unimportant? Very surprised at how great this was. Highly recommended if you like or dislike video games. Or if you kind of like them. Or kind of dislike them. Or if you can't make up your mind. Yup.
Real life is stranger than fiction indeed. Agreed about this story having a slightly dark tone to it at times.
Fantastic documentary. It's a fascinating world that can get quite dark at times. This film is really well made and entertaining from start to finish.
So great in so many ways. Billy Mitchell is someone that could only exist in the real world. A fictional narrative is not big enough to contain him. Wiebe is a hero.
