Herbert Ross

American director/choreographer Herbert Ross divided his time between Broadway and the American Ballet Theatre in the 1950s and 1960s. Ross also choreographed numerous live television programs, and handled the dance sequences of such films as Carmen Jones (1954), Inside Daisy Clover (1963) and Dr. Doollittle (1967). His first screen directorial job was Goodbye Mr. Chips, an overblown 1969 remake of a well-regarded 1939 MGM feature. Ross’ subsequent cinema reputation rested on his ability to transfer popular stage plays to the screen, as witness The Owl and The Pussycat (1970), The Sunshine Boys (1975) and California Suite (1978). some of the most boring filmmaking of all-time, cannot be saved by pretty good over-the-topsies from Mason, Cannon, Coburn and intermittently clever script. probably would make for a functional and vaguely forgettable novel.

Featuring a novel use for clown handpuppets and a wonderful turn by James Coburn's demoniac grin. The plot is a twisty and clever puzzle, perhaps a bit ahead of its time in that regard. The dark humor comes across less as caustic satire than winking in-joke, but that's OK.

You will never, ever guess the ending of this, even though the vital clue is practically shoved in your face.

A tremendously entertaining murder-mystery romp that shines because of its top-notch cast and a sharp, witty screenplay by Anthony Perkins and Stephen Sondheim. A genuinely puzzling puzzle of a film stylishly staged by director Herbert Ross. A lot of fun.
