Synopsis

An ensemble youth drama that takes place backstage at the Asakusa Opera during the Taisho period. The atmosphere of Asakusa and the manners of the times are vividly recreated, and Sugimura Haruko’s turn as a singing and dancing primadonna is a must-see. The cast throw themselves into their roles, and Uehara’s dashing turn as the hero made it one of his best-known films. Reiko, a pretty dancer who is pure of heart, is pressured into becoming the mistress of nouveau riche steel company man Handa, but her art student fans and fellow troupe members come together and fight to protect her. —Berlinale
