Loved this French adaption from Renoir. Now I've got to track down Kurosawa's.
The Ethics of Style. The villains of the piece are selfish, cruel, vain, or hypocritical: in short, they have no style. Pepel exudes style, lending grace to everything he does, even when he pilfers a fork or a piece of fruit from a stall.
it may be a bastardization of gorky's play but i can't help but forgive renoir for loving his characters too much to see them suffer. completely charming with a great performance by louis jouvet as the dissolute baron
