Hit and Miss

I love The Crimson Permanent Assurance short that opens the film. The first couple segments in The Meaning of Life on birth are some of the best. Cleese and Chapman as doctors delivering a baby and the song “Every Sperm Is Sacred” followed by the Protestant neighbors are absolutely hilarious. The theme song and Idle’s other song about the expansiveness of the galaxy that he sings when he pops out of the refrigerator are favorites of mine too. The last part I really love is the waiter Gaston following the sickening Mr. Creosote sketch. Idle as Gaston coaxing the camera to follow him is such a surprise and offers the most beautiful philosophy on the meaning of life. The rest of the sketches are uneven. Sure there are many more laughs to be found scattered throughout and it works as a whole, but there are also many head scratchingly disturbing moments too.
