"A literary masterpiece" indeed, though at certain points I kept wondering about the ethics of it, on the directors' part. But overall, genius editing! As I'm guessing from the film, the directors must have spent quite some years with the family and they managed to compile all the footage in a very smart way.
This film completely dispelled my naive romantic view of life in the Russian provinces. It's seemingly a life of alcoholism, brutality, poverty yet conversely one of extreme warmth and love. The mother and her children had nothing materially yet an incredible amount in terms of their love for each other; there is a lesson in that for all of us in the richer parts of the world. A beautiful, beautiful film.
Reminds me of the stories and pictures of the American Depression. People making do with little and doing it well. Love glows at the heart of things here although a cold and threatening darkness is always within range. The acts of men here continually disrupt while the women hold things together.
a really nice Film. The screnschoot in the train are so poetic. But the history is the best: The love of a mother
Acabo de verla en la sección de libres y me ha parecido una maravilla. La recomiendo.
My recurring thought was that I was so lucky to have been born in the time and place that I was... and also in the family I was lucky enough to be born into. I also thought about how motherhood is not automatically a saintly state...and yet how vital it is that every child have a good mother. The beauty and cheerful attitude of the oldest daughter shone like a beacon out from the cows and the dullard she married. My heart goes out to the mother for trying to rectify a horrible childhood by being a good mother but she needed to help herself first. She should never had had another child once she saw the situation she was in. I really enjoyed this thought provoking and stirring doc.
also for those very unfamiliar with the realities of society pictured in this film may be hard to understand how little the life of a person depends on what they want it to be or what they would choose it to be, how restricted it is to social conditions and culture they are born into and brought up in, how impossible it is to break through... i have no right and no wish to make these women responsible for their sufferings or blame them for what their lives are... they are Mothers and their everyday fight for life and hope is too much for any(most) of us to imagine
I identified a lot with the circumstances in the documentary. It made me feel that I was back in the slums. A lot of their conditions may be considered self inflicted but they seem to come along with poverty, all around the world. The whole thing began with the main character's mother having been addicted and living in poverty. It's followed the woman and even her grandkids will live like this. It's hard to break away from such conditions where there is no future ahead other than just surviving on a day to day basis. The only difference I can see here is that they have some sort of subsidy for children. Where I come from, you are on your own. You better hope more people are compassionate like this woman who has nothing in order to get anything. It's a heart breaking documentary that reminded me of my reality.
i watch it on a film festival in Belgrade...The film is beautifull, also it s hard in a moments, but it s neverendig job to be a mother, and this women Ljuba haven't got an ordinary life...but directors were able to presesnt it in realistic way,not cold or warm.. row.. yes,row is a real word...
