Jim Henson’s Muppets find themselves in Manhattan yearning to get a musical on Broadway in this charming film that also chides show business and its foibles. Kermit the Frog has just put together a successful variety show at Danhurst college (probably somewhere between Amherst and Dartmouth), and although he would like to mount it on Broadway so he would have a hit and be able to marry Miss Piggy, he cannot find backers. The Muppets are then forced to take jobs to support themselves, and it is while working as a waiter that Kermit meets the friendly Jennie (Juliana Donald). Jennie is the daughter of the owner of the restaurant and a source of great jealousy for Miss Piggy, who does not like competition. With stunning musical numbers involving a hundred or so Muppets and on-scene locations in New York City, the film is impressive in its merging of technical achievements and acting. —All Movie Guide
Born in Hereford, England, Frank Oz (born Frank Oznowicz) graduated from California’s Oakland City College during 1962 and joined the humans behind Jim Henson’s fledgling Muppet group as a puppeteer the following year. He was part of the first-season cast of Saturday Night Live as the Mighty Favag and appeared in The Blues Brothers with John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd. After The Muppet Show went on the air in 1976, Oz became vice president of the Henson organization, and was responsible for the portrayals of Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, and Animal, among other characters, earning three Emmy Awards for his work on the show. He later served as a producer for The Great Muppet Caper (1980), directed by Henson, with whom he co-directed The Dark Crystal a year later. He later directed The Muppets Take Manhattan in 1984. The Muppets crossed with the Rooney/Garland lets put on a show esthetic should have produced more gold than this mediocre effort. Had forgotton just how empty this film was compared to the first two entries and now compared to the most recent incartion looks even worse by comparison. Apart from the wedding finish really wasn't worth another look.
The first solo directorial effort from Frank Oz, it's also probably the best and most emotional of Henson's original Muppet trilogy. Through it's running time, it pulls from the audience what the old cliche in entertainment is: laughs, tears, shocks, and happiness. And with "Manhattan", it further proves that a cotton frog can be as connecting to watch as any of the great performers in cinema.
