In places, Blake Edwards’s 1968 comedy is like a slicker version of Tati’s great “Playtime,” with Peter Sellers’s hapless outsider bumbling his way through an elaborate, expensive Hollywood home with increasingly disastrous results. Unfortunately, Sellers’s comic-Indian accent is a little embarrassing, and you wish he would have played the character as a silent innocent, like Harpo Marx or Mr. Hulot. But the gorgeous Claudine Longet shows up to redeem the last hour, and it’s hard not to laugh when an elephant shows up for no apparent reason. Incidentally, this was one of Elvis’s favorite movies, and he was fond of doing impressions of Sellers’s character onstage in his later years.
