Well that would totally take away the whole point of his sacrifice now, wouldn't it.
I'm as agnostic a guy as you're liable to meet, but that doesn't mean I can't look at this film from a subjective point of view, and in doing so I'm very fond of it. Wonderfully atmospheric, well-photographed and beautifully scored.
A sort of religious torture porn, it's ecstatic violence will speak of our times to those morbid enough to watch it in future centuries.
Kudos to Mr. Gibson for making this film in Aramaic, Hebraic and Latin language; and to Mr. Deschanel for the beautiful cinematography. However, if you strip off all the gruesome torture and humiliation, this is a rather crude piece of filmmaking. It dwells on violence and merely tries to evoke compassion without really exploring why Jesus is a celebrated, admired man for millions of people. Not very gripping.

Saw the ludicrous extracts from this piece of shit in Brian Flemming's so-so The God Who Wasn't There. Of course, it's probably taken out of context, right? In context this is brilliant, down to earth, from the heart filmmaking? Or might Gibson actually have intended a parody of over the top passionporn? Holy shit!
Pasolini and Scorsese made masterpieces on the subject. Nicholas Ray made at the very least an interesting Hollywood epic. Mel Gibson made 'The Jesus Chainsaw Massacre'. Suffice to say I do not much care for this movie.
Wanna know why Jesus ain't coming back? Because even he gives this piece of shit a thumbs down and doesn't want to watch it!

The Romans were whipping him when I dozed off; when I woke up 4 minutes later, The Romans were still whipping him.
Christians everywhere played for fools: their savior voyeuristically exploited as a martyr for shock value and gore, and oh did they love it!
interesting that there are so many negative comments. this isn't a bad movie at all. this must just be one that has that kind of reputation where people just can't see it objectively.
Mel Gibson jerking off with Christian scripts. I'm just glad I didn't pay to watch this abomination.
I am not a religious person and I don't really have believe. But this movie was still a powerful film showing human nature.
Monica Bellucci was great as Mary. Otherwise, it was a useless exercise in focusing on the suffering of Christ. It was too myopic. There is more to Christ than his suffering.
Laughably bad. I wonder if they would have filmed the story of the Egyptian god Horus which the entire story of Jesus Christ was plagiarized from if it would have made so much bank? This movie is a dark day in human history showcasing the ignorance of the religious left in our society.
