Polanski is masterful with mise-en-scene.
i'm always thinking about this film and if it isn't relevant to my life, my mind makes it so. every time i listen to yann tiersen, i can't stop imagining it as a backdrop for his music. when i wonder about human frailties, i cannot get this film out of my head. this is a movie about the atmosphere, not the characters or even the story of the holocaust but if you breathe in the subtext, you'll understand all of it.
This isn't more than a good, enjoyable movie in the "dont' make me think too much" standards. The characters were blank and uninteresting (i guess the big nose was more important than acting). Even Brody's character looked rather bored than affected. Just because it's a Polanski movie doesn't necesarry make it a good one. Get over the sympathetic crap and think if you learned or saw something new after watching it
Thanks for pointing it out for me, that never occured to me. Now, taking the context that we are talking about a movie there are a lot of things you can learn: storytelling, character development, the use of image, sound, light. And I could go on, but you are right, you could never learn Math or Physics from a movie.
there are some movies need to be seen on the right time. the Pianist is one of them. i believe, if i have seen it two years earlier i would not conceive it as i did today. i would not see that this film possesses all the bitterness, injustice and yet striking beauty of this world, of entire human kind history. it is all about the perfect timing.
Nice work of art, I was actually expecting something completely different, something very classic like "a pianist is saved by a nice german general and they get friends but not really, because of this nasty war." Turns out it's not that at all, and if you forget about some obnoxious scenes (pure jewish sympathy crap), this would be the one movie I'd show to explain war to my hypothetic kids.
The movie in itself was dramatically moving, compelling even. I didn't even mind much it being a 'one man' story either. It is definitely not for everyone...but, such is the case of Schindler’s List. Holocaust movies make me cry like a mad woman, they're far from simple - they're worth it, especially if they explore deeper in ground. I have to add, Brody outdid himself. Great movie, overall.
I hate to say this, because I love Roman Polanski as a filmmaker so much, but one would think that he'd tell such a personal story well. Scratch that. It's a bunch of bad things happening to one guy. It's the Book of Job, but not in the funny A Serious Man kind of way. Brody is great as the titular Jewish pianist, and it's shot beautifully, but it tells the story anyone who payed attention in History class knows.
I find it wonderful that a film as fine as this has made its way into the mainstream public consciousness and people outside of cinephilic circles have discussed it at length, it fills me with hope. also, Adrien Brody is absolutely one of the best actors of his generation, and I pray he gets some more decent roles soon, he's a rare talent, but there's plenty of time for him yet.
Agak lupa ceritanya, tapi instrumen musiknya (piano) sangat menjiwai. Berlatar belakang perang dunia ke-2..
An apt portrayal of art, by a true artist in our recent history's darker hours.
The first half is handsome, standard-issue WW2 stuff ("potatoes! nothing but potatoes!", and the second? One man deep in a massive, often silent crater of destruction. Stunning.
Last hour or so in this film was beautiful, especially the scene where he plays the piece for Hosenfeld. Wonderful cinematography throughout, although I found the film moved a little slow at times. Overall, another great picture from Polanski.
La última gran película sobre la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Muy triste y muy hermosa.
Brilliant film, but the only thing that was done really stupid is the language of the film. Why did polish talk english? That was a bit funny and not well thought out, cause it comes out stupid.
As a musician, no other film comes close to explaining the personal tragedy of the Holocaust more than this film. So much to say about this film...and so little space in this wall post. Just do yourself a favor, and see this. NOW! In my top 5 films of all time.
