A shell of a film about events of the Irish Revolution in 1918. Ford wanted to cast exclusively with Abbey theater actors and RKO forced Barbara Stanwyck on him (two great artists who are wholly incompatible). The film was taken out of Ford’s hands near the end of production, all the love scenes re-shot, and the final cut was slashed to 68 minutes. The result is is a mess. Ford reportedly went on the greatest of his legendary benders upon this. Katherine Hepburn was called in to rescue him. She gave him whiskey mixed with castor oil to put him in the hospital and end the bender. He fell in love with her for the rest of his life.
