Synopsis

Max Bialystock (Zero Mostel, famous for his lead role in Broadway’s Fiddler on the Roof_) is a washed up Broadway producer who has fallen on hard times. Enter his nervous accountant, Leo Bloom (Gene Wilder (_Young Frankenstein), who makes him realize they could make more money with a flop than a hit. So the two set out to produce the biggest bomb in Broadway history, Springtime for Hitler. They’ve picked the worst play, hired the most inept drag queen director (Christopher Hewett), and cast the worst leading man they could find (Dick Shawn, playing the awesomely named LSD). But will their dreams of getting rich quick be dashed once the play becomes a huge hit? It’s a Broadway blitzkrieg of epic proportions. –DVDVerdict

dont get me wrong, I was never a huge fan of M.Brooks. But yes "Spaceballs" is amazing and few others of his films are okay and somewhat amusing, but the most of his films are just weak (even if you like this kind of humour). As far as I know, "The Producers" is his 1st film and in that way interesting. The idea, on which the film is grounded, is great, but what he has done out of it, is just another american mainstream comedy, which is, by the way, not even really funny. I havent even laughed once! for me this one is not a cult-classic and it is totally overrated, cause even if the big idea behind the movie is and sounds great, he has not done much out of it: the relationship between the characters is not painted, the humour is just on the surface and without any deepness. its not even critical in a good way. SO many chances in this story, so many missed oppurtunities. Just 1 great big idea is not enough to make a incredible film! it would have been great if there were some smaller great ideas too (show more of the play and those actors, more critical about the nazi regime, and so on). it just told this simple great idea of the script: fast, without any interesting sidesteps or a deeper message. if you know, what the story is about, you know everything bout the script already. not even the ending is amazingly creative. Maybe this film was revolutionary in the time it was made, but it does definetily not outlive the times. Just seeing Gene Wilder after such a long time, was a pleasure for me. 2 stars from my side, a rating i give all mainstream holliwood movies, which are maybe even somewhat amusing, but in total just boring and very fast forgotten again..

Don't get me wrong, I love Mel Brooks, but I like the remake better than the 1968.
