Such spectacular cinematography. I was awestruck by the beauty of the boat drifting off the island, spreading lazy waves in the dusk. Also, Ivan reminded me of the kid in Truffaut's "The 400 Blows".
The things that make this film great are subtle, nonetheless in quality. The imagery, the mood, the way in which the film is choreographed from start to finish was neither shocking nor predictable - simply well done. Ivan's performance was fantastic. Absolutely fantastic.
Extremely exquisite photography - but why on gods green earth is the trailed dubbe din English? Seriously? MUBI! Majorly disappointing.
Aside from its pretty images and little Ivan's tour the force performance, there is really not too much here. Any comparison to Tarkovsky is an insult to the master, who knew that open ties alone don't make a picture profound. It takes a lot more than that.
Wow I want to watch this again and again. Mikhail Krichman's photography is cold and striking. Beautiful Film!
There is no need to compare this movie... Its depth lies in its gestures and unspoken words... and the mystery of death as the actor playing the elder boy had died before the movie was even released...
Pretty feckin breathtaking. The photos at the end were fantastic. Amazing film.
Just watched "The Return" for the second time - so gorgeous and painful. Completely timeless, a journey to unimaginable depths.
Es increíble, un completo devenir la historia, me encanta la composición de los planos, el color es perfecto perfecto: frios y mas frios.
many people compares this to tarkovky or bresson's work, well, sure this has astonishing cinematography and super-gorgeous visual image, one of the best of 2000's, but for substance, this is nowhere near tarkovsky or bresson..
It felt like a breath of fresh air and the photography was absolutely beautiful. All I wanted was to keep watching the two boys with their father up until the ending montage, which was also great in drawing out my thoughts about the relationship the two boys have with their father. The color was fantastic as well.
You won't forget this one in a hurry. It is like a vivid and disturbing dream you can't shake off. The spirit of Tarkovsky is alive here. The story of two young boys' re-acquaintance with their estranged father works on its own and also as a metaphor for the state of affairs in post-communist Russia.
The Return 2003 DIR Andrei Zvyagintsev SCR Vladimir Moiseyenko, Aleksandr Novototsky 105 Min between the ages of thirteen and eighteen, i didn’t know where my father was. those years essentialized my memory, returning him as the universal father.
The film work is very interesting, with one scene in particular of the two brothers sitting in the boat looking hand-tinted. The key scene on the island tower is a great piece of misdirection. Fine acting, gorgeous cinematography, a great example of modern Russian film. Anyone know where it was shot?.
