If you ask anyone who has seen the entire Anderson collection, “The Royal Tenenbaums” always seems to be listed as the favorite. Don’t get me wrong, this film is brilliant and wonderful, but Anderson’s second best in my opinion. “Tenenbaums” has everything going for it; Anderson’s unique style, soundtrack, characters, and story. Granted, the story only revolves around the characters, therefore leaving little room for actual plot. But I do not ever once get bored with this film, nor even notice while watching that there is no clear plot or outline. The characters are so fascinating and perfectly portrayed I find myself sucked into the world of the Tenenbaums, which is a wonderful world.
Gene Hackman is no doubt the most successful in this film. The way he portrays Royal is nothing short of genius and perfection. His cheeky ways and limited days truly come to life and create a most wonderful person; I wish he was my grandpa. Bill Murray has a much smaller role in this film, but nonetheless charming and hilarious. Angelica Huston has never been a favorite actress of mine, but I always enjoy her in Anderson’s films, and she is the most wonderful in “Tenenbaums.” The rest of the cast is just was wonderful and each brings their own unique characters to life.
“The Royal Tenenbaums” is definitely a good watch and a very well made film. I feel like this film is the closest to Anderson’s own heart and self. I cannot fully explain why, but watch the film and i think you might understand. I feel totally enraptured. A great watch. Too bad Owen Wilson destroys a beautiful car.
