I absolutely love Tarkovsky’s work, and have all the others on dvd, but for some reason this movie doesn’t move me like the others. I’ve seen it multiple times, but it seems to be a comedown after the astounding sequence of the previous five he made starting with ANDREI RUBLYOV. Even IVAN’S CHILDHOOD, while obviously a freshman effort, affects me more than this movie. Maybe it’s because SACRIFICE has the least Russian feeling of his body of work. That probably leaves me with the feeling that it’s less a work by Tarkovsky and rather a very good Tarkovskian imitation. I was also not able to identify with any of the characters. Why should I when none are particularily interesting? I’ll give it a try again, and probably even buy it so I can have the complete collection, but to me this is his least successful film.
