the final work from the legendary director, it is more accessible than the mirror, stalker, solyaris & nostalghia. offret is about philosophy, the empty soul, and human emotion against the fate. according to Chris Marker in the documentary ‘One Day in the Life of Andrei Arsenevich’, the scene when alex burned the house was captured 4 element of Tarkovsky’s trademark, water represented by sea, fire, soil/earth and air (wind), these element embodied with human emotion, and he describe it as ‘super human’. the main story of the film is, Otto his friend persuaded him to have a sex with Maria, the lady maid, in order to save the world, because Otto believe she was witch. it was the answer of his prayer to god, he said he would do anything to prevent the war, even sacrificing family, the house and himself. Alex was complex character, and finally he did the dirty job.
the visual that Tarkovsky made was very artistic, beautiful and poetic, alex when floating, the milk spilled when the aircraft passed and the burning house scene was perfect example of amazing visual that Tarkovsky gave to us. i like the way camera moved, very slow but captured many amazing details.
