Beautiful, interesting, incredible cinema.
A middle-aged retiree has become invisible to all Romans. He contends with an aristocratic, spendthrift mother; a wife who is more patronizing friend than romantic partner; a daughter with a slacker boyfriend whom Gianni unwillingly befriends; and a young neighbor who sees him as her dog walker.
Gianni Di Gregorio plays a version of himself grappling with a late-life crisis — longing for his golden years and glory days. The Salt of Life is a rich, realistic film that celebrates and luxuriates in its Italian setting as its protagonist endeavors to get his groove back.
