fassbinder simply used the set because it was available and suited his needs not because he liked this film
Loved this movie! Also, a fun little tidbit: Fassbinder loved this film and shot the entirety of Berlin Alexanderplatz on the same sets that Bergman built for this film!

Brilliant, horrifying, and relevant! The idea that Carradine did a terrible acting job has spread like a virus and it is completely wrong.
This film was very different to other Bergman films, The set designs and the cinematography were a lot more complicated. It was fun to see david carradine playing a jewish acrobat. A very weird film, as if to convince you to lose all hope in humanity. A prequel to WWII
I was so upset/happy because the intro totally made me think: "THIS IS WHERE WOODY ALLEN GOT HIS INTROS FROM" and the juxtaposing of the music/credits and the images had me cracking up ... silly Bergman i should of known better than to expect the whole film to be that kind of fun. Still loved it though.
This film is criminally underrated. Regarded as one of the great Ingmar Bergman’s worst films by critics and Bergman himself, this film has been ridiculed for its ridiculous plot and awkward acting. While the plot might admittedly be quite foolish, if read from a more sociological approach, the film’s subtle greatness, albeit a rather logically flawed one, comes to light.
