a part of me likes the idea of this....
The face of existential despair, in my mind, is not Edvard Munch's oft stolen painting but that of Antonius Block. As the witch burns in front of him, and his squire confronts him by saying that it is neither god nor the devil that awaits the suffering child but pure nothingness, a visibly shaken Block nonetheless refuses to relinquish hope that maybe, maybe...
"I want to confess as best I can, but my heart is void. The void is a mirror. I see my face and feel loathing and horror. My indifference to men has shut me out. I live now in a world of ghosts, a prisoner in my dreams."
Though the subject is morbid, The Seventh Seal retains a great sense of humour and thrives on its perfect balance between being both philosophical drama and black comedy. Bergman’s fixation upon death as the inescapable is manifested with such craft and beauty that the questions of our own existence are somewhat unobtrusive, replaced instead by the awe deserved of this great masterpiece.
Bergman's powerful study of faith, death and meaning in exiistence still holds its power to enlighten and entertain. Gunnar Fischer's cinematography is just amazing full of pristine images and framings. Performances are well cast across the board especially a young von Sydow as the knight. Bergman's script and direction have influenced generations of young filmmakers at this point. Better with each viewing.
Bergman's stunning, complex, and expressionistic masterpiece is a philosophical horror film about humanity confronting the ultimate mystery of life.
It's got all my favorite Bergman elements - Sydow, Gunnar Bjornstrand, Bibi Andersson, and depressing questions about man's existence. All it's lacking is Liv Ullmann.
did they Sweden(or any Scandinavian country from that matter) had a translation of the bible in the dark ages? or are the knight s wife reading in Latin and doing a translation for the sake of her guests at near the end of:"the seventh seal"?
Ingmar Bergman's The Seventh Seal, with the depiction/personification of Death scourging the lands of Medieval Sweden, during the Black Plague. A knight returning from the Crusades, tries to find an answer toward the morals of humanity and his own existence. Featuring one of the most iconic scenes in cinematic history, a game of chess between the knight and Death. Philosophy of God's existence in this essential.
