this is a movie that requires maturity in life rather than skill in cinema. a real masterpiece that has more insight to life than almost any film I have ever watched. truly a great film that shows what cinema can really do.
A realistic character study, with extreme close ups,not much dialogue that lets the viewer think.Another great film from the Dardenne brothers.
The simplicity of the film's style belies its intensity. Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne let the naturalism of the story's revelations drive the suspense and bring the film to its conclusion. A "minor" masterpiece in scope and form.
Gripping right from the start with an intense unease that makes more sense as the storyline progresses. Very much a real life drama. Compelling.
This is the perfectly distilled Dardennes film and there's hardly a thing in it I can find fault with, so I'm at a bit of a loss why I found it so dissatisfying. It's almost as if the Dardennes have become too predictable- nothing in the film surprised me. Every emotion felt like a familiar recitation. Even Olivier Gourmet, who startles me in every performance, felt a bit rote.
It is easier to appreciate this film if you are a forgiving person. And if you have seen this film, then you know what I mean by that.
I recently saw The Wrestler and realized just how influential this film was and the films of the Dardenne brothers. Of course they were also influenced by Robert Bresson and many of the neo-realists but this is filmmaking at it's finest. Everything is just so subtle and perfect and it builds and builds to a heart-wrenching and emotional conclusion... I wasn't this moved by a film since Au Hazard Balthazar.
