The mother and father stayed with me more than the children ... I'm not sure what this says about me. I think the environment the parents created for the children as a result of their individual predicaments was so sad and so beautiful.
I remember not remembering anything from this movie except the begining. Now, I find this is one the most sensitive movies about childhood.
One of my fave films ever. The lead girl gives one of the best performances by a child EVER. I wish there were more Erice films out there.

A screening of Frankenstein in a quiet Spanish village has a profound effect on a 7-year old girl. Her fantasies of meeting the monster are transferred onto the reality of meeting a wounded deserter...This quiet and contemplative film is a subtle critique of post-civil war Spain under the dictatorship of Franco. It is also virtually plotless, being a mood piece of haunting originality and astonishing visual beauty...
The movie brims with a sense of innocence and wonder for those moments and feelings we all eventually have to come across but not always wish to do so, the evocations of childhood memories achieved here are as striking as no other movie I've experienced before. Beautiful film.
No words to describe how beautiful this film is. That's what I'm talking about. So simple....
Though it may be the beginning of what would later become the 'twee arthouse film', Spirit of the Beehive has enough real heart, substance and panache to understand how a decidedly classic film is structured and do you one better. It was a favorite of the late Satoshi Kon, which is how i found it, and you can definitely see the influence it had on his work.
A quietly stunning piece of cinema that helps us remember what it's like to be a child. The cinematography is astonishingly beautiful; the house with its honeycombed windows and honey colored light surrounded by a bleak landscape says more than words could.
A stunningly mysterious film, deliberately paced and at times nearly a silent film. It is also perhaps the most accurate yet dreamlike portrait of childhood ever filmed, and with great performances, cinematography, and score. A true work of art.
2nd greatest film ever made. Surpassed only by Malick's The New World
Masterfully crafted piece of Art! An allegorical film about the Spanish Civil War. Little reading of Spanish Civil war and Francisco Franco's era before watching this movie will make this movie much more enjoyable experience for you. Highly Recommended!
one of the most poignant films I've ever seen. Breath-takingly shot while using very little dialogue but still managing to unveil a simple yet richly detailed and emotionally gripping strory makes The Spirit of the Beehive nothing short of a masterpiece. Everyone should see this now!
Erice's depiction of childhood is so innocent, convincing. The film itself is so simple, yet the symbols go deep...almost unfolds like an allegory. Visually gorgeous.
I love you. I want to be more than just friends. I've felt this way for some time. You don't even have to love me back. Just let me stare at you for awhile, please?
Ana Torent's amazing, yes, we know. But why no love for Isabel Telleria, she was just as good as Ana (Dare I say better???)
