Burton is superb, and so is the cinematography, the atmosphere, the whole bleak feeling of the Cold War. The characters move in and out of spaces, through rain, like the walking dead. However, the first half was far too slow, I didn't start to feel sympathy for the characters until later on, and for a thriller, the suspense didn't ratchet up until towards the end. Still, it deserves points for unrelenting realism.
If the boring first half of the movie wouldn't exist it would be a great movie! The plot is the most fascinating thing about it.
A great portrait of spook-craft, the Cold War, and moral blindness. A complicated story told very, very simply, not even a score to speak of. The scenes between Burton and Werner are just great to watch...top actors at the top of their game. That fact alone warrants the fourth star. There is a slight ponderousness in the pacing and a few scenes have a "stagey" feel. Overall, a sure cure for James Bond-itis.
Awesome! Been ages since I watched any Richard Burton movie and I'm not even a fan of his, but this is just a pretty good spy movie!
This movie is just about perfect; the whole thing just feels so advanced, so ahead of its time, and I am constantly impressed with what Ritt was able to accomplish. Truly a gem of cinema, one that should not be missed. Seek it out, if you haven't seen it. Savvy
