When I was thirteen, I saw a child smear his semen across a locker and bookshelf, and it was then and there I fell in love with independent cinema and the endless possibilities therewithin.

Noah Baumbach gives us not only an honest portrayal of a marriage falling apart and the difficults of growing up, but also the process of falling apart our self-assumed/created masks and roles. Are you a philistine or a non-philistine? Apparently complex, but deep down nothing but "common" characters. 3/5 stars

Meh. I don't think chaining embarassing events is really interesting. Decent actors though.

I really enjoyed this. Jesse Eisenberg and Jeff Daniels were impressive.

comparing this to other films of the droll and tragic variety—which is a class i often thoroughly enjoy—this was terribly stale and only made me pity the characters rather than empathize with them.

And maybe the movie is about this: how are these people to live without a reference and that they had not exist or is no longer the same (the family, in case). And there's not a happy ending here. Now it's time to go on living. Totally recommended (without exaggeration ...)

I believe you can't truely understand this movie, or at least the younger characters if your parents haven't divorced (which makes Eisenberg's performance all the more amazing).

A prickly, well-written, excellently-acted little familial drama from Noah Baumbach (who would go on to do prickly, well-written, etc. familial dramas Margot at the Wedding and Greenberg). Jesse Eisenberg and Jeff Daniels are the highlights, but Laura Linney's overlooked performance is brilliant as well.

A pretty open-eyed look at the effect of a divorce on children. Also shows parents to be what they really are -- flawed and not gods. The character of the father is particularly pathetic. Jeff Daniels is amazing at showing the insecurity, fear and immaturity beneath an arrogant exterior.

Something about Jesse Eisenberg really bothers me. I know I don't really have a reason to, but I want to hate him.

An honest movie with an ingenious script. It almost didn't feel like acting, that's how true the cast was to their characters. Loved the Pink Floyd as well!

Jeff Daniels is fantastic in this role. This film has such an authentic feel, very hard to achieve. Great screenplay, great cinematography and editing and has the best endings in recent film history... (In my opinion)

Divorce isn't awesome, but this movie certainly is. Despite the headcase moments from the parents and the kids, this is a movie that shows a deep affection for its characters, with their petty grievances, foibles and all in full view. It's tough to love your family sometimes, but "The Squid and The Whale" shows that even the most dysfunctional families can come together at times when it absolutely matters.

Having seen how divorce affects people, this film didn't appeal to me all that well. I was rather taken back by it and paused it several times to try and understand what was going on. The son masturbating and spreading his sperm all over the library books was incredibly disturbing. Yes, it made sense, but it was still disturbing. Margo at the Wedding is much better.

Very authentic and specific emotions were perfectly presented in this film by Baumbach and by the cast. Superb writing and acting... one of my favorites!

A story about a dysfunctional family in New york. An intriguing script which is sometimes shocking and sometimes endearing.Add to that brilliant performances and a purposely disjoint screenplay which adds to overall charm of this film.
