so true- Jeff does a lot of that in Imaginary Heroes as well
Noah Baumbach gives us not only an honest portrayal of a marriage falling apart and the difficults of growing up, but also the process of falling apart our self-assumed/created masks and roles. Are you a philistine or a non-philistine? Apparently complex, but deep down nothing but "common" characters. 3/5 stars
Meh. I don't think chaining embarassing events is really interesting. Decent actors though.
Had a really good time, was not expecting anything and was pleasently surprised.
A prickly, well-written, excellently-acted little familial drama from Noah Baumbach (who would go on to do prickly, well-written, etc. familial dramas Margot at the Wedding and Greenberg). Jesse Eisenberg and Jeff Daniels are the highlights, but Laura Linney's overlooked performance is brilliant as well.
A pretty open-eyed look at the effect of a divorce on children. Also shows parents to be what they really are -- flawed and not gods. The character of the father is particularly pathetic. Jeff Daniels is amazing at showing the insecurity, fear and immaturity beneath an arrogant exterior.
Jeff Daniels is fantastic in this role. This film has such an authentic feel, very hard to achieve. Great screenplay, great cinematography and editing and has the best endings in recent film history... (In my opinion)
Divorce isn't awesome, but this movie certainly is. Despite the headcase moments from the parents and the kids, this is a movie that shows a deep affection for its characters, with their petty grievances, foibles and all in full view. It's tough to love your family sometimes, but "The Squid and The Whale" shows that even the most dysfunctional families can come together at times when it absolutely matters.
Having seen how divorce affects people, this film didn't appeal to me all that well. I was rather taken back by it and paused it several times to try and understand what was going on. The son masturbating and spreading his sperm all over the library books was incredibly disturbing. Yes, it made sense, but it was still disturbing. Margo at the Wedding is much better.
Seriously, fuck people who don't like this movie. I take it as a personal insult.
