incredibly creepy too
Moral of the Story: If you're thinking about renting an apartment, and the woman showing it to you tells you the previous renter tried to commit suicide and then starts laughing, it's probably not worth it.
One of the strangest films I've seen in a long time. It takes a while to finally start down the road of what the film is, but when it's going there, it's pretty good. Also the well-dressed crowd applauding was totally genius!
Weird, Bizarre, Creepy and Totally Wonderful. And who can resist the beautiful Ms. Adjani anyway? Philippe Sarde's score? Perfection!
With the second viewing, I found the dubbing exceedingly annoying, I couldn't remember if, on the first occasion, it was with French dialogue & English subtitles. I might watch it again if a subtitled version were available. However, I can't say I'm keen on this instalment of the trilogy, it certainly pales in comparison with the other two: Repulsion & Rosemary's Baby - both masterpieces of psychological horror.
I was surprised at the turns in this Polanski film, and this is the first that Ive seen him as an actor and he did great. I love conspiracy/plotting films (i.e. 'Rosemary's Baby') and he executed another great one which turned the main character paranoid. Filled with humor, horror, mystery, and more frequently, very strange occurences, this is a true masterpiece. The last 30 minutes are intense.
This was interesting and worthwhile, genuinely shocking at times too (in a good way), but I'm not quite sure what to make of it after watching it for the first time. Definitely had a nice musical score, just a bit unnerving with how things ended up. They ended up that way without any clear impetus, aside from his choice of residence. That's not a criticism, just an observation.
this film made me physically sick.i still remember it.polansky smoked "gauloises" french cigarettes in it.
After REPULSION and ROSEMARY'S BABY, the Polanski hero dares to come back into an apartment. And, once again, it goes rather not well for him. This time, schizophrenia gives way to persecution delirium and THE TENANT becomes a study of a mental case from the patient's point of view. The film is at times fascinating but it cannot be compared with its precedent variations. I don't know exactly why. Maybe because of a too elementary story, maybe because there are too many characters involved or maybe because Isabelle Adjani character is not as interesting as it could have been. Recommended,,though.
The Tenant is and incredible study of paranoia and madness. This wonderful adaptation of Topor's novel struck me on a level unlike any other films I've seen. Polanski is fantastic as Trelkovsky, which is no surprise. Trelkovsky and Polanski have a lot in common. In the film, Trelkovsky is the outsider, and Polanski will ALWAYS been considered an outsider in our society, which is truly unfortunate. This is one of Polanski's darkest films, and I HIGHLY recommend it.
A really good film that blurs the line between reality and insanity. "At what point does a man stop being himself---when he's lost his head? Can the head claim to be a person's real Self?" The transition from sanity to madness carried on with a furtive slither so that, all of a sudden, there was complete, suffocating madness. That was this film's strongest point!
I respected Polanski until now, but now I simply love him. This surly will be one of the most amazing cinematic rides for everyone that goes for it. And yes, go for it!! Goosebumps!
It was so good, it's creepy. The Tenant defines eeriness. A true disturbing psychological killer played&directed by Polanski. His mind was believably mad in or probably off screen. Terrifying!
Le locataire defines eeriness. This movie was one very true psychological thriller. Madness, total madness, in a very good way. It's really good, it's creepy.
This movie messed me up with moving into a new apartment for years. I still think about it every time I relocate (which is what my wife and I did last August and yes, I thought about certain scenes in this film at that time and it fucked with me a little bit). A great film, with a superb cast. One of Polanski's very best films and that's high praise.
Always a movie I feel really close too. Perhaps, I am a bit too paranoid ! ;) Wonderful scary !
Polanski finishes the apartment dwelling trilogy with a unique, strange and captivating film loathed by critics back on its release. it goes from a regular, existential black comedy unrelentingly transmuting itself into a paranoid, atmospheric journey of macabre visions and insanity.
