No dames and their vaginas. Just men, dirt, gold and greed.

All writer-directors working today owe a debt to people like Huston, who helped prove to studios that writers could be trusted to be at the helm of their scripts. This is possibly Huston's best, as he pulls out all-time great performances from both his father and Bogart. Masterpiece.

the film has its own rhythm, provides a wide scope of the lives it presents and uses chance as its compass>bogart comes and goes back from sanity a little to much, but the film isn't ultimately about him, not at all>

The funny thing is that some stupid people think this is a "Western".

Bogart's best. A classic and gets-better-with-every-viewing masterpiece. Bogart's transformation into a greedy, crazy man couldn't be any better. John Huston is one of the best directors.

Impeccably acted and produced by all concerned. I can never escape the feeling that the film loses its way toward the end, that it takes a little too long to wrap up.

This is one of the best films that examines the greed that gradually gets the better of good people.

A film like this will never be made again. Entertainment at its best, while keeping a deep focus on character development.

An excellent film, it shows what gold does to a mans soul. And the greed that stalks the souls of good men cursed with the burden of an instant fortune. Its an excellent study on the human condition and what makes us human, and how easily we can lose that in sight of mass fortunes.

There is so much tension in this film from the distrust of the three leads, interlopers and Mexican outlaws that it effortlessly carries you from the start right to the finale. Clearly, anti-greed, the film never feels like it is preaching. Great to see Humphrey Bogart transforming into a bad guy.

Bogie's character arc is unforgettable. He turns so ugly, from the inside out. The best study of greed.

Brilliant. One of the few movies I NEED to watch at least once a year, what with Walter Huston's worldly Howard ready for adventure, and with Bogart's transition from an honourable to paranoid Fred C. Dobbs. And it wouldn't be anything without Tim Holt dreaming of peach orchards, or Alfonso Bedoya's malicious smile. This film is easily in my Top 10 of all time, if not my Top 5!

If nobody else is asking it, then dammit I will. Would this movie really be half as good/revered as it is without Walter Huston's little jig?

A classic adventure with Humphrey Bogart, Walter Huston & Tim Holt as the pack of losers who sold their souls only to find countless misfortune and greed, but also laughs, pure absolute movie magic.
