The lives of ordinary people given operatic treatment with a jazzy score, colorful sets, and lovely cinematography. I love this movie.
i'm not sure how i feel about this film...the ending was quite similar to that of Kazan's Splendor in the Grass, but i liked that ending much better. it felt more definite. nevertheless, the colors and music were breathtaking.
Great colours and scenary and also an excellent Deneuve. I can't consider this movie a masterpiece 'cause I don't like its extreme pathetic side. The story is a little dull too.
Not a musical but a all-singing opera. Vivid and delicate love story from amazing and revolutionary colors. Beautiful Deneuve!
I saw this in the theatre last week during the Catherine Denevue Festival in Chicago. Stunning. This was made to be seen in an old theatre.
For a musical that runs on purely song it happened to be fantastic different point of view. Well recommended to any musical fan and lover of colorful cinematography. Brilliant ending as well.
A haiku for THE UMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG: rain and tear drops wet- brightly colored bittersweet- litmus tested love
Ughh todo dialogo esta melosamente cantado... solo llegué al min 15 min por vencido :)
A gem. A penny plain story of young love split asunder is here transformed into a heightened piece of supreme melodrama. Finding musicality and colour in the drabbest moment or locale, Demy lifts the banal to new heights of expressionism in this insistently focused film and utilises one of the most gloriously gaudy colour pallets yet captured on film.
A musical that ceases to be a musical because music is the language of the world in which its characters inhabit. What is a musical if every word is spoken in song? This movie - amazingly making what could have been a pretentious, self indulgent concept movie into a charming, magical, poignant fairy tale about life, love, and loss.
loveloveloved it. great colors and music. catherine deneuve is fantastic. i wasn't sure if i could deal with the whole entirely-sung thing, but it ended up being perfect.
An opera that starts with men fixing oily cars in a garage, flows on through the feminine world of pastel pinks and oranges and breaks your heart with the perfect denouement of impossible love.
What a lovely film! It manages to be both eye-catchingly beautiful and heartbreaking. I could watch it again and again - and I don't even like musicals normally...
i love this film. thank you Jacques Demy. thank you Michel Legrand. the colours! les couleurs! belles couleurs!! in the high-pitch of Catherine Deneuve [which is really Danielle Licari]: "Guy!" (pronounced: 'gE'!)
