I've always wondered why she didn't make it big in the 90s. In Being and Enemies she seemed to have "it" in spades!
Good performances by actors ... but i didn't like the movie, it's somehow too slow and not believable. I wasn't able to get into it and i was kind of waiting for it to end the whole time.
Great performances and some marvellous scenes that somehow didn't make an amazing movie!
There are many parts of this film that strike deeply into masterful territory but again I struggle to really get into a character I find somewhat unlikeable. Juliette Binoche is as radiant as ever and she brings out so much nuance in her character. It's strange that Daniel Day Lewis was the one I found most impenetrable despite his fine credentials. A film I feel I might fancy the book even more than the film.
This film and Paul Mazursky's "Enemies: A Love Story" offered Lina Olin her best acting opportunities, at least in this country. Either performance should have made her a star. Oh well...
Well , I exaggerate the 1st time when I rate it 5 stars .. I slept and wake up and said " this movie was to be better .. I mean the cast is amazin' .. amazin' performence from all the actors ..based on Kundera's Novel .. the music was good .. But the result isn't that charming ! Unfortunately !
And for sure the unbearable lightness of Binoche and Filrtin' Tomas .. and for sure Amazin' Sabina
Any adaptation on Milan Kundera's novels will fall short, unless the audience would be willing to sit through an entire film of subtitles and reading Kundera's book aloud. You cannot simply reflect Kundera's literary take on love, compassion and other seemingly incomprehensible emotions into film. Simply impossible. Although, it somehow helps when you have Daniel Day Lewis, Juliette Binoche and Lena Olin as cast.
if this was based on an original screenplay, i would've said this movie was excellent. but kaufman's version didn't do kundera's book justice. this should have been directed as an art film.
I just watched this after 3 years, and fell in love all over again. It's strange how some actors can capture the essence of a character; a few gestures, or a certain look in the eyes is all it takes.
Yes, especially Daniel! Though Lena Olin and Juliette Binoche were also fantastic.
Don't watch this. Read the book. No wonder Kundera doesn't allow any adaptations of his books after this. Terrible.
And what can life be worth if the first rehearsal for life is life itself? a very well done screenplay adaptation
my English professor is the daughter of Donald Moffat, the doctor in the film who advises Tomas to write down his political musings (and later to revoke them) I just think that's cool haha
A desirable and tender drama with strong performances, good script, and solid direction.
