straightforward film without fancy shots or shot editing, still conveys psychological realism and serenely beautiful imagery. Questions and accepts God at the same time as a survival mechanism in their quest to understand cruelty in the world. Reveals guilt and the crossroads of Norse paganism and early Christianity... especially with Max Von Sydow's character.
The Virgin Spring remains one of Bergman's best and most accessible films because it avoids getting bogged down in a lot of his usual angsty pretensions. Instead the viewer is told a simple, haunting tale which plays out like a ballad. I cannot discredit the power of the images enough. The cinematography is nothing short of stunning, the lighting and the staging all perfect. Such an emotional and powerful film.
An astoundingly moving film from the master of imagery. Bergman displays his genius through, again, the use of silence. Ms. Pettersson enraptures you immediately. At a mere 88 minutes, Bergman shows us the true way to tell a story on film.
// I do applaud The Virgin Spring, w/ mise en scène primal and stark, whose ballad told does vengeance sing through fists of feudal patriarch //
"The Virgin Spring" is both an intellectually rich and visually brilliant film. Ingmar Bergman once again focuses his direction upon the unfortunate inevitability of Idealism and Innocence being sullied by the realities of the world. And here Bergman presents an interesting resulting approach to a world that has been corrupted; one of Stoic acceptance and Optimistic hopefulness in an eventual purification.
My favorite classic Bergman film, I actually prefer this to "The Seventh Seal" and "Wild Strawberries" but that is just my personal preference. Those looking for a Bergman movie with a more strict storyline will enjoy this movie.
A really great film.Another film which shows that Bergman is one of the greatest directors ever and one of the greatest philosophers about religion. And Max von Sydow gave a flawless performance too. Bergman films have such a power.
I wanted to look away as the young woman was raped, and as the film ended, I wept. So quiet, so beautiful.
